Happy New Year and Happy Friday! In an effort to highlight some of our favorite books from pre-80 Books Blog reading, we are introducing #fbf reviews! One of my new favorite books I read this past year is a flashback all the way to the 1890’s…
The Golem and the Jinni is set in 1890’s NYC, which personally is awesome to read about since I live and work in this setting. It tells the story of the Jewish legendary creature, a golem, and the Arab mythical being, a jinni. How the lives of these two intertwine, plus the lives of those they know, really expands on the historical and cultural significance of the era. It also explores many morally ambiguous questions like nature vs. nurture, creationism, and fate.
It is intricately layered, with fantastic characters, and great writing. I’m so pleased with this book. The story is so beautifully woven, and I have no complaints. It’s historical fantasy fiction, my new favorite genre!
