There was an episode this week! American Holidays be dammed!
We begin at the wall. It’s already snowing heavily as Jon sets off with Tormund to speak with the wildlings. Sam gives Jon dragon glass. The tension with Jon leaving is palpable. Meanwhile, Maester Aemon is dying in his bed. He is playing with Little Sam, who reminds him of Aegon Targaryen. “Get him south, Gillyflower, before it’s too late.”
Theon brings Sansa food, she has bruises on her arm and is crying. She asks Theon for help. She asks him to give the signal in the tower. It’s also snowing heavily here. Theon appears to go to the top of the tower only to find Ramsay.
Maester Aemon dies. Sam gives a eulogy and they burn his body. Allister Thorne says Sam is losing his friends. (A threat?).
Next, in Winterfell, Ramsay summons Sansa and explains that they are still expecting Stannis, even with the snow storm. Sansa brings up the expected new son, baiting Ramsay that he could be removed because his royal decree was given by Tommen, another bastard. Ramsay says bastards can rise, points to Jon Snow, who has risen to Lord Commander. This is new information to Sansa. She doesn’t have much time to process this because Ramsay shows her the old woman who told her about Brienne’s signal. Reek had sold her out. The old woman is skinned alive except for her face.
Stannis is somewhere between The Wall and Winterfell, trapped in the snow, 500 sellswords deserted in the night, horses are dying in the cold, they are running out of food, but when Davos suggests they go back to The Wall, Stannis gives an impassioned speech about moving forward. He will risk everything. Davos leaves. Melisandre suggests using Stannis’ daughter’s Baratheon blood, like they tried to use other’s blood, to eliminate threats. Stannis sends her out.
Gilly is washing some clothes when two guys threaten to rape her. Sam comes in and starts swinging his sword. He gets beat up by one, while the other holds Gilly. Sam is bloody on the floor. Sam stands and makes a point about killing a white walker, but then Ghost, Jon’s direwolf comes from nowhere and scares off the guys. In the bedroom [ 😉 ], Gilly cleans up Sam. He says he’ll always take care of Gilly and little Sam. Gilly kisses Sam and then climbs on top of him. (Finally)
Back to Tyrion and Jorah, they arrive at an auction where he sells Jorah. Tyrion doesn’t want to be separated from Jorah so he says he’s a team with Jorah and to prove himself he beats the person holding the chain around his neck, the merchant to buy him too.
In Dany’s bedroom, Daario is a bit jealous about her upcoming marriage. He says she should be able to marry whomever she wants. But she argues that she can’t defend the city from outsiders if there’s still problems on the inside, so her marriage is purely political. He says she’s the only person in Mereen who is not free because she can’t make her own choices.
Olenna attempts to talk to the High Sparrow. He reiterates that her grandchildren will receive the same punishment as anyone else, they will be judged by the “father.” Her threats to stop food supply are meaningless to him. High Sparrow threatens her back, subtly, back saying those in power are just as in danger as the filth in the street.
Tommen is on a hunger strike. Cersei says it’s one of those things that is out of his control. But Tommen loves Margaery and he is upset he can’t help her, he cries for war. Cersei says she will talk to the High Sparrow. She says she will do anything to protect her children.
Meanwhile in Dorne: Jamie has a chance to speak to Myrcella. She doesn’t accept the reason for him to bring her home, that Cersei doesn’t think it’s safe. She loves Trystane and he doesn’t even know her. In the dungeons, Bronn sings. Tyene starts flirting with him, but as she strips, he starts to feel dizzy. Turns out that the cut on his arm was from a poisoned dagger and in order for Tyene to give him the antidote he has to say she is the most beautiful woman in the world. He lives.
Little Finger in his destroyed brothel, meeting with Olenna. They both acknowledge that they had a part in killing Joffery. He has information to give to her since their interests are aligned. (We’ll have to wait to find out what it is.) Olenna receives a message when she leaves from a place with a black wax seal.
Jorah is informed that he has the potential to fight in front of the Queen, which invigorates him to fight. But Dany is actually at the trial, instead of the main event. He races out there and easily destroys all of the other fighters. Dany watches the fighting, intrigued, but also horrified. Once he wins and shows her face, she orders him out, but he says he needs to speak with her, he has a gift. Tyrion emerges as the gift to the queen.
Cersei visits Margaery in her cell. Margaery accuses Cersei of lying about her decency and throws her food at Cersei. Cersei has a smug face as she leaves to speak with the High Sparrow. She asks what is next for Margaery and Loras, if they go to trial they will be judged by Seven septons, including himself, and if they were to confess before the trial, they would be swiftly judged and punished for their crimes. Then the High Sparrow begins a story about how the rules apply to everyone, lives will be knocked down. “What will we find when we strip your finery” he non-so-subtly tells Cersei. Lancel has much to say about her. Cersei is thrown in a cell for her crimes. “Remember my face. It’s the last thing you see before you die.”
