Sometimes I don’t like every book I read. In this week’s #fbf review, this is one of Isabel Allende’s books I didn’t connect with. Instead, I recommend House of Spirits.
Maya’s Notebook by Isabel Allende
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
I didn’t really care for the voice. The protagonist was too careless in her decisions and I couldn’t find any reasoning as to why I should root for her. Was she numb to everything? It barely felt like there were consequences for her actions–even her trucker kidnapping and working for a drug lord didn’t feel dangerous. Also, I felt that the Allende/Pinochet back story of Maya’s [spoiler] grandfather was distracting from the overall plot, it seemed forced (which I’m gathering from the author is a theme in many of her novels). Overall, it just wasn’t working for me, which is why it took a while to get through.
