Synopsis:
Suzie’s just a regular gal with an irregular gift: when she has sex, she stops time. One day she meets Jon and it turns out he has the same ability. And sooner or later they get around to using their gifts to do what we’d ALL do: rob a couple banks. A bawdy and brazen sex comedy for comics begins here!
I really loved the concept for this book. Stopping time through orgasm? Who doesn’t like the sound of that? The criminality of the title comes in when the protagonist, Susie, meets John, who also stops time, and they decide to rob a bank to save the library where Susie works. Of course, there are these sort of “sex police” who are roaming around stopping criminals and deviants, but this Volume didn’t really get into their origin or where they came from. All we know is there is a stuck-up mom figure who prevents them from robbing the bank and kidnaps them. John and Susie mangage to escape, but it’s not fully explained what the deal is with those “police.”
I found the back story (aka sex history) for Susie to be pretty interesting. Susie would use the void to scream at her mother who became a shell after Susie’s father died. But John was also interesting in that he had a fling with a man in college. It’s not seen as bad or morally wrong, which I appreciated reading. He was looking for someone else who shared the time-stopping gift.
In terms of the art, the timeless space –where most of their criminal activity takes place– are some of my favorite sequences because the art is so beautiful. There are waves of time floating around them in a sort of glowing aura. (And John has a glowing dick, it’s pretty great.) The glowing and the coloring in these panels feels very calming. However, when the sex police show up, they are dressed in white, but it seems so dark and intrusive in contrast to the glow.
I highly recommend this one and I look forward to reading Volume 2!
